Richmond & Hillcroft Adult Community Collegeis a further education college for adults, with over 7000 learners. Located two minutes from Richmond station, and with another campus in Surbiton, we are within easy reach of London to suit learners travelling across the city. As well as over 2000 courses, we host an exciting events calendar featuring concerts, drama, lectures, workshops, displays and fairs throughout the year.

We are looking for a new Musical Director for Cantanti Camerati, a mixed voice chamber choir of up to 36 singers, specialising in all genres of the small choir repertoire, ranging from early music to the present day.

The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings during college term times at Richmond Hillcroft Adult and Community college and gives four to six public performances each year. The Musical Director will be responsible for giving overall musical direction to the choir, rehearsing the choir to a high standard, and conducting and accompanying the choir during performances. 

The job holder will be under a variable hours contract. The course is scheudled to be 2 hours per week for rehearsals during term time. Once on our list of tutors, we may offer you other courses that come under your remit.  


Job Description

The post holder will:

1.    Conduct the choir in all its concerts, accompanying pieces as required by the programme.

2.    Work with the committee to set the themes and venues for an annual concert programme before the start of each year.

3.      Propose concert programmes to the committee at least 6 months before each concert date, working with the Librarian to source copies of music, either from the choir’s extensive library, or through hiring or purchasing of additional material once agreed.

4.      Lead every rehearsal, but when attendance is not possible, to arrange cover by a suitably qualified deputy.

5.    Advise on other musicians needed to supplement individual performances from time to time, and be responsible for recruiting and preparing these.

6.      Audition potential new members, advising the committee on maintaining the size and balance of the choir.

7.      Continually develop and improve the vocal technique, performance skills and repertoire of the choir.

8.      Work with the committee to ensure the promotion of the choir, and the recruitment and maintenance of membership.

9.      Actively assist with the marketing of concerts, including the writing of programme notes and helping to highlight attractive aspects of forthcoming performances.

10.    Attend committee meetings as appropriate and be fully engaged with the life of the choir.

11.    Lead the choir on occasional tours in the UK and abroad, including exchange visits with choirs from Richmond’s twin towns.

12.  Be responsible for the following in their role as class tutor

a.    To liaise with the college regularly and promptly regarding the timing, rooming and frequency of classes in order to ensure that there is appropriate rooming allocated and Cantanti Camerati appear as part of the RHACC performing arts offer.

b.    To ensure that members of the group are registered as learners at RHACC and registers of attendances are kept on a regular basis.

c.     To ensure the health and safety of the learners at all times whilst on college premises.

d.    To have a clear understanding of Equality and Diversity and how it applies to an adult college environment


The ideal candidate will:

1.    Have experience of leading a choir or group of singers to a high performance standard, or to have recently received appropriate choral training.

2.    Be enthusiastic, innovative, and corporate in their approach

3.    Play the piano, sight read, and accompany others to a high standard

4.    Have the skills to mentor and develop the vocal technique of the choir.

5.    Have relevant qualifications (including a relevant teaching qualification) or appropriate experience as a Musical Director.

6.    Desirable: have a teaching qualification or equivalent experience in teaching


The choir rehearses between 7.30 and 9.30pm, each Thursday falling in college term times.

In 2018 our main concerts are in March (The Normansfield Theatre, Teddington), June (St Anne’s Church, Kew Green), October (tbc) and December (St Mary’s Church, Twickenham).

Remuneration: Rehearsals will be paid by RACC at sessional (grade A) rates for 2 hours per week (term time only). The choir will additionally pay concert fees on a per concert basis. Overseas tour costs are covered.

As a Sessional Tutor, you will join our bank of teaching staff and will be offered other courses as and when they match your area of expertise.

Hours are variable and cover daytimes, evenings and weekends. Part-time Tutors work closely with Programme Leaders in the designing, planning and delivering courses which stretch and challenge our learners as well as preparing a variety of learning materials, providing guidance to learners on progression options, attending termly meetings and completing course administration. You will have the opportunity to pitch your own ideas for new courses and help shape the singing provision.
